The case for making Expression encoder a freeware !
- Okay, Microsoft is making a spirited effort to gain some kind of market share in the battle of web video and animated banner ads, a market which Adobe pretty much dominates at this time. So Microsoft has gone ahead and developed a whole host of technologies and tools to meet or exceed the capabilities of Adobe's Flash. But the way I see it, Microsoft has gone overboard and turned this Silverlight and Expression set of tools so complicated and so convoluted that the only ones who really understand it are a handful Microsoft engineers. And then to make matters even worse, most of these tools have no real tech support to speak of and on top of that they're trying to charge top dollars for these tools where they should be giving this stuff away. So, the question is, who is going to adopt this technology and for what good reason?
Silverlight has been out for about a year already and there is only one major commercial website (Netflix) who has adopted the technology.
Also, I have not seen a single animated banner ad that is using Silverlight.

In my opinion, you are wrong :) . I'm an asp.net developer, and for me it's easy to learn and it's a small step to taken. And secondly, if I learn WPF I can make desktop applications (WPF) and webapplication (silverlight) with 1 technology and 1 set of tools ... . Because I'm an asp.net developer and I develop in C#, I can learn very very fast the new technology.
And what's complicated with the Expression set ? It's a very easy to learn set of tools, and on lynda.com you've got free video lessons to learn it.Okay, Microsoft is making a spirited effort to gain some kind of market share in the battle of web video and animated banner ads, a market which Adobe pretty much dominates at this time.
