trouble running Design/Blend
Hi all,
I downloaded and installed Expression Studio through Dreamspark. I can't seem to get Blend and Design to work. Web and Media work fine, but when I open either Blend or Design, I get, "Microsoft Expression Blend (or Design) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
The report for Blend contains,EventType : clr20r3 P1 : blend.exe P2 : 1.0.1083.0 P3 : 4613c995
P4 : microsoft.expression.framework P5 : 1.0.2.1000 P6 : 4613c973
P7 : b58 P8 : 0 P9 : system.typeinitialization
If I choose debug, the error shown is, "An unhandled exception ("System.TypeInitializationException') occured in Blend.exe" [3264]Running XP sp2, tried repairing install, also installed Visual Studio 2008 and have .net framework 3.5 installed, and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Again, Web and Media work fine, as well as VS2008.
Any ideas?

- I wanted to give one more update on this issue. The environment variable wasn't the cause of BrokenSequencer's crash. After doing a remote debug we were able to figure out that it was, in fact, a corrupted font causing the problem. Someone else had pointed that out earlier. In this case there was a font called Tahoma.ttf with a size of 0 KB in the Windows fonts folder. Design does load the fonts on launch through the environment variables, which is how I found the other issue. The environment variable was good in this case and pointed to a good location.
What to look for if you suspect a bad font: Any font in the fonts folder that doesn't report a size or has a size of 0 KB, doesn't show a name or a font type. If you receive an error deleting the font you can run SFC /SCANNOW from a command prompt to do a repair of system files. You may be promtped for the operating system CD when you run this. Another option is to run CHKDSK /F from a command prompt to have windows repair bad sectors/clusters on the hard drive.

- I'll ask our support engineer to take a look at this. I've seen this problem reported before. Can you tell me which Operating System you've installed the Suite to?
Annie - Running XP sp2
thanks for any assistance you can offer - Our support engineer is looking into the problem and has suggested the following:
1. First, make sure you have the .NET Framework 3 installed. Go to Add/Remove Programs and look to make sure you have the .NET Framework 3. Even if you have the .NET Framework 3.5, Design can't use that version. You can install the .NET Framework 3 without disturbing .NET Framework 3.5.
2. Turn off Hardware acceleration in your display settings.
3. If the foregoing doesn't work, boot into Safe mode and see if you can run Design and/or Blend.
4. If none of these work, look in the Even Viewer and post the results of the crash in the two most recent entries so the support engineer can have more information to isolate the problem.
Thank you for your patience. I'm sure this must be frustrating for you.
Annie - Annie,
Thanks for the info. Will try this evening and post back. As far as .net 3, I'm fairly certain expression studio installed v3. I then read somewhere online that someone was having the same issue and installed Visual Studio 2008 and then Design/Blend began working, so I tried that and that's how I got to .net 3.5, but I will try your suggestions and post back. Thanks again for all of your help. - Annie,
Made sure .NET framework 3.0 is installed (along with 2.0 and 3.5) Turned off hardware acceleration, tried safe mode...none of it worked...I rebooted each time a change was made as well...also made sure graphics card (ATI Radeon 9600 xt 128Mb) was updated with latest driver. Still receving same error, only now, Blend never even comes to the error screen. Design waits at the little splash bar for about 10 seconds, then goes to the error reporting option, but now Blend just sits and never does anything.
The event viewer shows the folling error for Design:

what does this mean in terms of fixing anything (sorry, I'm not much on programming or hardware)
here's some more info...this was posted on the Dreamspark forum after I posted the stack trace and event viewer info...

This seems as if you have a font installed that is causing the problems... Have you ever tried to uninstall all the custom fonts that you have on your system. One of them kills Blend. I have read about this issue already somewhere else. Can't exactly remember where. The dude made it run again by deleting some custom fonts. Here it seems as if during the creation of a Font object inside of Blend the whole thing crashes. Probably the font can't be initialized properly.Have you a lot of custom fonts installed?
brokensequencer said:interesting...I don't have many, if any, 3rd party fonts that I know of...I'll have to check...I recently reformatted the machine anyway, and right off can't think of anything in particular, but I will def. take a look and post back. When I run Design, I see there is a task running called PresentationFontCache.exe. Could this have anything to do with it?
Thanks so much again. - just a little more info. I posted a stack trace on the Dreamspark forum and this was the reply from Christian and my reply as well.
Christian said:
You could check and remove the custom fonts that you installed... At least the following line at the top of the stack trace:System.TypeInitializationException was unhandled
Message="The type initializer for 'System.Windows.Media.FontFamily' threw an exception."
Source="PresentationCore"
TypeName="System.Windows.Media.FontFamily"
StackTrace:
at System.Windows.Media.Typeface..ctor(FontFamily fontFamily, FontStyle style, FontWeight weight, FontStretch stretch)tells me that it has to do with the constructor of the FontFamily class.
Also, I have read in some forums that the issue was fixed by removing the custom fonts and reinstalling them. Seems like as when a font isn't installed properly the FontFamily from WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation - on which Blend is based on) has problems.

Thanks for the help. I checked my fonts folder and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I even went through and deleted the fonts that I didn't recognize as "core" Windows fonts. Didn't see any custom or third party fonts. I've included a link to a screenshot showing the current fonts I have. Thanks again so much for your assistance.

Annie - Good idea! Better than trying to teach you to debug software issues here. Anyway, such a problem is rather easy to solve. Good luck!
- Hey all,
Just an update that I believe I've resolved this issue. The crash is occuring because of a bad system environment variable on the machine. I haven't yet heard from BrokenSequencer whether this resolution solved his problem, but I was able to reproduce the crash on one of my machines here internally and resolve it. Here's a breakdown of the issue and what you can do to fix it:
Problem
=============================
When launching Expression Design or Expression Blend, they will crash.
The crash report for Blend will contain:
EventType : clr20r3 P1 : blend.exe P2 : 1.0.1083.0 P3 : 4613c995
P4 : microsoft.expression.framework P5 : 1.0.2.1000 P6 : 4613c973
P7 : b58 P8 : 0 P9 : system.typeinitialization
The crash report for Design will contain:
EventType : clr20r3 P1 : design.exe P2 : 4.0.2712.0 P3 : 462db6fd
P4 : presentationcore P5 : 3.0.0.0 P6 : 470bc96a
P7 : 5217 P8 : 0 P9 : system.typeinitialization
Cause
=============================
The WinDir system environment variable is set to an incorrect value or is not resolving the %SYSTEMROOT% value to C:\Windows
Resolution
=============================
1. Right click 'My Computer', left click Properties, click the Advanced tab, click the Environment Variables button
2. In the System environment variables find the one in the list labeled windir – the value should be resolving to C:\Windows
3. Click that variable to highlight and then click Edit. The variable name should be windir and the value should be either %SYSTEMROOT% or C:\Windows – if you have %WINDIR% in there it won’t work. If the value already says
%SYSTEMROOT% but also appears in the environment variables dialog as ‘%SYSTEMROOT%’ that means it’s not being resolved correctly for some reason. In that case, set the value to C:\Windows and you should be okay.
4. Click OK to close the dialog box and launch Expression Design or Blend. - Will,
Thank you for all your work on this issue!

Annie - Just wanted to say thank you again to all who assisted and especially Will for his patience and courtesy. Running Design now and it seems to be a very powerful program with some awesome possibilities. Thanks again.
- Hmmm... what are those fonts doing?
- I don't suspect malware in this case, if that's what you're alluding to. I believe this was a unique situation where a bad sector or some other hard drive anomaly happened to manifest itself over the spot where the Tahoma.ttf file was being kept, which caused it to only report some information.
Windows most likely tried to repair the file each time Expression Design was launched but received the CRC error and crashed the application. CRC errors are usually problems with the physical drive and can usually be cleared up with CHKDSK /F, which is what resolved this issue. - Might be useful info for some:
I had a virtually identical error with MS Pro Photo Tools. Un- and reinstalled all relevant Dotnet Frameworks and checked the fonts as advised above but with no success. Finally I did the WINDIR environment variable "trick" (see above) and it worked!
I have tried all the tricks on the book but my Expression Studio (Blend, Web Design) 3 still crashes..

South African- I would recommend that you install the Windows Cleanup Utility here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Once installed, try uninstalling Studio. If it still won't install, try installing it again and if the programs still don't work, uninstall Studio using the Cleanup Utility.
Assuming this method is successful and you want to install Studio again, try right clicking on the install file and choose Run As Administrator from the contest menu. This used to solve some issues with Design.
Please let me know about your progress. If this doesn't work I'll go find Will, our support engineer, to help you.
Annie I have tried that one as well... But the funny part is that even after unistalling Studio using Windows Cleanup Utility, I can still see Expression Studio in My Control Panel... But I even tried to install it again but it installs very well but still gives me the same problem. Today I have run the Debug Diagnostic Tool, results are as follows:

South African- Ok, this is all Greek to me. I need to go find Will and send him over here. Chances are I won't be able to contact him before Monday though. Sorry for the problems and the delay!
Annie - Ok, Thanks for your help Annie... Please forward the problem to anyone who might assist... Or else I just have to wait until Monday...
One other thing, I think maybe my .Net Framework 2.0 might be corrupt, because the dll its complaining about its under the .Net Framework 2.0 Folder (C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll.)
Maybe I need to repair it.
I running Vista on my machine, I read somewhere that if you need to repair .Net Framework 2.0 in Vista, you basically have to repair the OS because .Net Framework 2.0 is part of Vista.
What I have noticed is that you can not install or unistall .Net Framework 2.0 in Vista... It is not even appearing on your Control Panel....
I am left with one option: Repair Vista

- I need to mention that I have run the:
>sfc /scannow
>CHKDSK /F
Trying to repair anything that might be broken....
South African I did not have any choice but to re-install my OS to solve the above mscorwks.dll problem...
