Password protect a "membership Only " page in existing web site
Password protect a "membership Only " page in existing web site
- I have a web site that is already on line. I wish to add a "members only" area. Which means I want to PW protect that part of the site. This members only area will have a link to another off site. thus it would be in a way a "gate way". This area would also hold information that would not be for public viewing. This site is a non commercial - (non profit) org site. So please don't suggest a "for a fee" solutions. Thank you

What type of server is the site on?
If Apache / UNIX, there is usually a built in password feature in the web masters CPanel
that can be used to password protect a folder.
If a windows server, try the instructions here:

- Your password-protected folder is going to link to a second site, and the second site also has "private" information? You're assuming that since the link to the second site is in the protected folder, that the second site is "protected"?

Simply create a new folder and password protect it.

Since you're on an Apache server (checked with Page Headers ) you can easily password protect with an htaccess and htpasswd file.

- If you want a full-blown membership application, this would be quite complex. If you want something simple using HTAccess, without messing with the Htaccess files, Cofeecup software has a solution (pay for it though, which you say you don't want...).
CoffeeCup Web Access Manager (Shareware - fee payable but good software)
or something like DirectoryPass or it's more comprehensive cousins: LockedArea or OpenCrypt
I think these pretty much all use the htaccess features of a Linux/Unix server.
Your hosting control panel (like CPanel) could have such a feature to add basic security to a folder/page.
