can't open web sites since i upgraded to windows 7
- I did a clean install of windows 7 then installed office 2007 then expression web 2. I can open my websites on my computer (Disk) but can't open remote site or type in the http://domain.com and then put in password will not open. sites are a frontpage server extension server. My other computer still has vista on it and every thing works fine in expression web 2????

- Well there must be a problem with FrontPage extensions on an linux server and windows 7, the server folks where I have ny sites worked on this on and off for two days and finally said they could not fix the problem it was a solfware issue.

- I got the capture files you emailed to me. The server does send a WWW-Authenticate and your client definitely tries Basic authentication with an encoded value. However, if I take that value and decode it, it's not a full username and password. It looks to just be your username followed by a colon.

- I unstalled Expression Web 2, I did a clean install and didn't let it update and it works fine now with http or ftp (I'm using http) and after I get all sites in the web site folder with saved passwords I'll let it update and see if it makes a diferent. (windows 7 64 bit) One more thing when I opened EW 2 on my vista computer today it told me I would need to install TCP for 32 bit as I was typing in the password for a site. Vista is 32 bit on that computer. I didn't install it (never said how to) and it opened the site fine. Could have this been the problem on my windows 7 64 bit computer, it said I could http with out the TCP 32 bit on the Vista computer.

I don't think Win 7 should make a difference. To use http to access a remote website I recall that the remote site needed to use FrontPage Extensions. So if you can access it via http from another computer you should be able to access it from the Win 7 computer (if you are typing the exact same address)
I have very few sites now that have FrontPage Extensions, but I just found one that does, and I can access it via http from Expression Web 3 with a username and password. And everything displays properly.- Could it be your firewall blocking a port you need?
- Win 7 has a built in firewall so check and make sure that EW is allowed to connect through it.
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes - windows 7 firewall is turned off, I use Norton I.S. and I tried with firewall shut off in Norton also.
this is the error i get in expression web 2:
"The web server does not appear to have any authentication methods enabled. It asked for authentication, but did not send a www-authenticate Header."
Like I stated before my other computer with Vista 32 bit and expression web 2 connects all the time and haven't had any trouble connecting it also has Norton I.S. on it.
The computer I'm have trouble with is a clean install windows 7 64 bit
If I knew were to locate the files on my vista computer that I click on under network-web sites I could maybe copy them to this computer, but they will not let me copy them in internet explorer and I can't find where they are at on the drive.
I've checked all the setting I can find in expression web 2 on both computers and as near as I can tell they are the same. - also have a laptop that I just put windows 7 32 bit on and expression web 2, Norton I.S.
Same error in expression web 2 - Try removing Norton IS - actual removal, not disable. Symantec products
have a reputation for causing these sorts of problems.
Turn on the Windows 7 firewall, and get a free anti-virus program (such as Avira) first, though.

Are you trying to open a site that is located on your local Windows 7 PC (IIS7)? If so then you cannot do it via URL since Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 do not support Frontpage server extension :(
I have the same problem and unable to find a solution.
- That's not caused by an xWeb setting. When you need to authenticate to a server, your first request sends no authentication. The server responds with a 401 (which means that access is denied) and that response includes a WWW-Authenticate header that lists the authentication methods that the server supports. The client then uses one of those authentication methods to authenticate to the server. If there isn't a WWW-Authenticate header in the response from the server, the client (Expression Web in this case) doesn't know what authentication method to use, so it doesn't send anything.
The best way to troubleshoot this would be to get a network trace with Wireshark and examine the packets to ensure that a WWW-Authenticate header isn't being sent. If it's not being sent, it could be because the server really didn't send it or it could be that something between you and the server changed the headers.

I used Norton Antivirus for many years (only the antivirus, never the other Norton products) and was happy with the virus protection. I typically bought a three computer license. Then, sometime in the past 12 months it did an update of the program on one of my computers and I could not access the Internet from that computer any longer. I tried for a day to modify the settings for Norton to allow me access to no avail. I stopped all the things I could find involving Norton from running. That didn't help. The only thing that restored my Internet connectivity was to uninstall Norton Antivirus. So I switched to Microsoft OneCare for my virus and spyware protection.- This is very good information, Jim. I didn't know how the authentication piece worked, and so I really appreciate your detailing it.
Rod - Here's another vote for ditching Symantec (Norton). I have had far too many experiences when working with service clients of Norton causing issues, and in particular connectivity issues, whether Internet or even occasionally local file and printer sharing. Personally, I also don't care for Norton's tendency to want to take over the whole bloody system, its bloat, or its resource consumption.
I use free alternatives for firewall, anti-virus/anti/spyware, etc., and I have never had a virus in the 26 years I've been online. Of course, back in the day the main threat was boot sector viruses from floppies being passed around. ;-)

Plural's don't have apostrophe's. It seem's sometime's that any word's ending in "s" get a gratuitous apostrophe. Apostrophe's are used to indicate possessive's and elision's (contraction's or abbreviation's). - windows 7 computer, I removed Norton I.S. and tried without any firewall or anti virus and still would not login, same error. Still worrks on my Vista computer can login to websites without any trouble.
- Try opening the site in Internet Explorer and then in IE click File > Edit with Expression Web and see what happens.
Expression Web MVP - I did what you said but after expression web 2 opened up to edit the page it just keep asking for password and user name over and over again never would let me in.
I downloaded the trial of expression web 3 and tried it also. When I try to open the site it only opens the home page and not the folders so I only have the home page to work on. I didn't try it though IE. - That's a TCP header and inconsequential.
The server does appear to be sending a WWW-Authenticate header indicating it will accept Basic authentication. The realm is really funky. I can also see that xWeb attempted Basic, but because this is just dumped into a post, it's hard to follow. Could you make the .cap file available where I can download it and review it?

So I quit trying with http:// and I'm useing ftp:// now and everything works fineIn my case since Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are using (IIS7.5 NOT IIS7) which is not compatible with (Ready-to-Run FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for IIS 7.0) I enabled WebDAV on the IIS7.5 server (it comes with it you need to enable it) and now I can use Expression Web2 and Web3 without any problem. Regarding the web hosting server being a Linux server, I have not experienced any problem using Windows 7 to publish my website.
