My catalog jumped up in size from 334 mb to 1.4 gb
My catalog jumped up in size from 334 mb to 1.4 gb
- This happened when I added 16 gb worth of images on 8/12/2008. My previos additon was on 7/7/2008 when there were 16136 images. This happened when I added 2,364 images to my file. It may have been when I upgraded to v2. I've tried reducing my thumbnails but only had an improvment of 200mb. I have 23,302 images in my file and I have bumped into the 1.8 gb limit.
Maybe I don 't know how to do it. I have changed my thumbnail size to the smallest
I have a quad four 2.83 mhz Intel processor with 4gb of memory. I am using v2 of expression under Windows
xp.

I ran a new test with basicallly the same results as before.
I can't explain your test results or the error message about 1405 images scanned.
I made sure that previews were turned off. Both camera generated and EM2 genterated. Only 160 pixel thumbnails were generated. The 18501 images went from a file size of 1.4 mb to 1.3 mb. When I examined the media image it was still the original size of the camera. Note that I had an error message stating: 1405 were scanned, 5 were not. I don't know what that means because all 18501 were selected.
I then made sure the same conditions were set and ran the previous version of the catalog which had 16278 images and had 329 mb to start. It was reduced to 294 mb. When I examined the media image it was still the original size of the camera. Note that I had an error message stating: 1405 were scanned, 5 were not.
On the other issue you state I can create a new catalog and re-import the images. The file size is still the same and the media view is still camera size.
I think I should re-install the application. Do you agree?
Bob
Don't understand your question about creating a new catalog. Do you mean that you did create a new catalog and re-import your images and the file was still huge, near 1.8GB? If so, something is definitely wrong since you cannot have a large catalog file with only about 20K images and 160 thumbs unless you have EM2 generate its own previews. The size of the original images and any embedded previews is largely irrelevant to catalog size. EM2 catalogs grow in size mostly due to its own thumbs and previews generated during import.
I don't know whether reinstalling EM2 would help. If you did try a new file and an fresh import of your images and that did not solve the problem, I think you should contact MSFT technical support. Apparently no one from MSFT is going to respond here.

- I would guess that for new images added to your catalogue you are building both thumbnails and previews. You have to a have a thumbnail, although the size and quality is up to you. What you probably don't need is a preview image. These are much larger in size and a couple of thousand of them can easilty take you to the catalogue size limit. You need to check your preferences and change as required. Then rebuilding the offending images in your catalogue should reduce its size. Make sure you have a backup of your catalogue just in case - although everybody should have these backups as a matter of course.

- I've tried that. I changed the rules and rebuilt all of the items that I had added between the two catalogs. The file size went from 1.4 to 1.2 mb when I changed the thumbnail to the smallest, lowest qaulity and removed the full size preview. It seems like the full size preview is stuck and won't go away. Is there some way to check to see if it is still present?
Also, is there a way to "select all" catalogs. It is a pain to have to select them and their subcatalogs manually?

To find out if an image has a preview: Go into the menu Edit/Thumb and Previews, then Check Display previews at all times, then select the image(s) and look at it(them) on the Media tab. If there is only a thumb, you will see the thumb at the size you specified upon import, if there is an EM2 generated preview you will see it. The preview will be one of EM2's specific sizes 800 pixels, 1024 or 1280. The size is displayed in the status bar at the top right of the Media window.

Just to confirm, if you in fact have created EM2 previews by mistake and you now want to get rid of them: 1) select all images with previews, 2) go into Edit/Thums and Previews then Uncheck Create full screen previews, 3) make sure all the relevant images are still selected then Ctl+B or click Action/Rebuild. That will remove EM2's self generated previews. After EM2 is done processing the images, check to make sure you only see thumbs when Display previews at all times is checked.
If your catalog size is still near 1.8GB after that, maybe closing and reopening EM2 or rebooting will solve that. I never removed EM2 previews since I need them so I don't know what happens if a big bunch are deleted.
Your situation is of course another example of the many problems caused by EM2's ridiculously small catalog size limits.

Bill Wood- Thanks for the explanation. The file size did not change.
Unless you or someone else can come up with something else I am at a roadblock. I'll have to consider recataloging or buying a new product and hopefully importing this catalog or starting all over.

Well, you did not give a sufficient response for us to understand what you did or evaluate what happened.

I just ran a test for you on my catalog. I removed EM2's import generated previews from a little under 5K out of the 20K images in the catalog. It took about 15 min for EM2 to rebuild the 5K batch. My test catalog size went from 1.3GB to 1GB. I could see the catalog size change on the status bar as the images were processed. This makes sense since my catalog size went down by 23% (.3/1.3GB) when I eliminated previews from about 24% of my total images.
At this point we don't know whether you even have any EM2 generated previews, what their size is or how many you have. If you don't want to experiment to find out what is going on, simply create a new catalog file and re-import all your images. That will definitely cure your problem and get you back to a small catalog size. It does not take long to import about 20K images especially if you do not generate previews. Make sure you have Create Full Size Previews unchecked if you create a new catalog.

- I found the answer to getting the catalog to a smaller size. I started with my small catalog that had some 18000 items and exported to a series of XML files from the big file and then imported them into the small file. The reason that I had to use a series of XML files and not one big XML file is because apparently XMl files can't be any bigger than 1.8 gb either. About 1800 images or so was the limit. Once I got the imported files into the one file I had to rebuild them.
My catalog file went from 1.8 gb to 585 mb with 23222 images.

Bob
