Question about moving styles into a style sheet - workflow to avoid problems

Hi,
I know how to move styles into a style sheet using the manage pane but ran into some duplication issues. I realized as I did it that there was probably a better way to avoid this and being a CSS novice I had missed it.

My question is this. If one has 10 pages - each with 3 styles on the page .style1, 2 , 3 what is the best way to move them in to a CSS file without ending up with 10 .style1 etc?
What is the best workflow to avoid this and lastly does it matter if one has 30 styles spread over 10 pages as embeds vs putting 30 styles in an external css file?

special characters in Dutch language are corrupted after import in EW3

Hi, I am converting a site from one hosting provider to another. Doing so I open every page in EW3 in order to add one extra tag.

Unfortunately all special characters used in the Dutch language such as ë, ï etc are corrupted.
here's an example page in the olde site with correct characters: http://rainbowdolphinspirit.nl/
(look at the text 'geïnspireerd door het Dolfijn– en Walvisbewustzijn.').

pages don't have an encoding meta-tag.
What has happened and how can I prevent EW3 from corrupting the dutch special chars?
second question related to this: How can I enter such a character in EW3 with the keyboard? simply pressing shift ", i doesn't produce ï like in other text editors.

Drill from gridview

I am using EW2 and MS Access. I am able to drill from a gridview to a details page by adding a column and making the added column a hyperlink. Is there a way I can achieve the same result but by using a field that is already in the gridview rather than adding a column and having the same text all the way down the grid on each row. I done it the way I would like previously in Frontpage 2003. Thanks

Excluded Folder does not Suppress Remote Changes

I have posted this as a bug to Connect but I wanted to provide visuals.

I have excluded a folder from publishing. In this case, I've created a dummy folder locally to match a remote folder that is populated with statistics out of my control. I'm trying to get EW to ignore that folder. Here's my exclusion:

In other words, EW is saying that I have some remote files that are not matched locally even though the local folder is excluded.

There is no question that "exclusion" works. EW ignores the folder on local to remote publishing. However, it clearly does not ignore the files in that folder on the remote host. My position is that if a folder is ignored, it is totally ignored.

About base tag

Could anyone shed more knowledge on base location in ‘page properties’ in EW3?
Is it a must thing? How much is it influence the website?
Is it ok for DWT connected pages to put the tag inside the editable region?

Truncating a memo field in my website

I have a comments field in a database that is a Memo data type. I would like for in my website to be only to show part of the field and I'll have it when they click a link it will go to a page with the whole comment field showing.

If you go to http://www.johnnycurtisrealty.com/v2/residential.aspx you might see what I mean. The gray small words beside the picture is what I would like to be truncated.

safari won't display asp.net menus

I have used ASP.NET Menus in a site for the first time www.real-ronda.com. The menu works well in IE, Firefox, and Opera. Unfortunately, whilst I can get the menu to display in Safari it doesn't work correctly. If I click on a submenu the menu disapears and nothing happens. This seems like an old problem because there are a couple of supposed 'fixes' on the web, neither of which worked for me. Any ideas?

I am using both EW2 and the trial version of EW3. Would using Visual Studio work any better?

Does anyone know if the final release of EW3 is much different to the trial version? There are some improvements certainly but I am not sure if they made it worth upgrading....

I have had two crashes of EW3 one before and one after installing the update, on Vista 64.
The registry is kept clean by use of CCleaner, and PerfectDisk 10 keeps it defragmented. Temporary files
are regularly removed, except for those created in the last 24 hours. Kaspersky Internet Security shows no evidence of malware. Scan of system files(sfc /scannow) shows no evidence of 'integrity violatons'.

I notice that FP Cleaner has not been updated for use with EW3.

Tune-Up utilities includes too many features, including the defragmenter which can create conflict with PerfectDisk. So I prefer to avoid it.

Are there any patches expected to improve stability of EW3?

Expression Not Spell Checking

I can not figure it out. Sometimes it will spell check, sometimes now. I just create new, blank pages but text is not always checked. I can not understand it actually. ESv2 is the only MS application installed. Are there any hints I can try out?

Considering Expression - Would like advise & have a few questions for those who have used it.

I’m considering purchasing Expression 3 for web site design. I used Front Page 98 a long time ago. I’m starting from scratch so I don’t need to worry about converting anything.

I’ve downloaded the trial version and looked it over some. Keep in mind It has been a while since I used Front Page and it didn’t seem very intuitive to me.

I’ve been online and watch some of the tutorial videos, once which was showing how to use the templates. There are not templates in this trial version. I really wanted to see what the templates looked like because that will help me in my decision to purchase this or another product. I can tell you I’m not very verse in html, although I know the basics.

I really want a program that can at least give me a good start wit a template which is how I remember Front Page.

Questions:

a) Does the purchased version of Expression have Template and/or layouts?

b) How many?

c) Are they of decent quality?

d) Are they easy to expand on?

I appreciate any help, advise and if anyone can link me to see what the templates look like.

Publishing a Subsite

I am able to publish my main site to our server, however I am not able to publish the subsite. It keeps telling me it "cannot create folder .... ". My remote website properties have the "include subsite" selected. Any thoughts???

Hello!

As someone with my own server, I didn't really pay much attention to FrontPage for the last several years. However, this week we had an incident where we wound up rebuilding Apache and Frontpage server extensions on the server because they became corrupt and no one could use Frontpage. This brought up the knowledge that FrontPage is now considered legacy software and Microsoft no longer supports it.

So, I need to alert my frontPage users that they should look into upgrading to Expression Web, however, I can't find any information anywhere about the publish process. Does it still use "extensions" or is it now an FTP interface? I need to know if they'll still have issues like we do with the FrontPage extensions.

Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

How can I get all of my images to show up in explorer?

I am trying to get familiar with the jquery ui that was recommended. I have gotten to a point where I can add a new tab in the tabs effect ui. However, how do you customize the tabs and the header to be smaller than what you download when you roll your own theme in order to be confined in a smaller div?

Also is there a way where you can roll your own effect that has the hover over effect instead of the onClick effect?

How can I fix display issues in Expression?

Hello. I have downloaded the trial for Expression Web 3 at home after using it at my school. I've been using FrontPage 2003 for many years but most new webpages don't display correctly in it anymore.

Anyway, my issue is that items on the screen don't display correctly on Expression Web 3. During setup the only thing that popped up on the screen was "Decline" so I ran the MSI package instead. Basically, many items on the screen are missing or dissappear when you hover over them, making the program nearly impossible to operate. Click here for a screenshot. The items in the toolbars also dissappear sometimes, so it isn't just the menus. I am running Windows XP SP3, 512 MB of RAM, and my display drivers are up-to-date. The school also uses XP SP3 and it works fine.

If there is anything I can do to fix this problem, please let me know. I apologize if this was posted elsewhere.

Expression Web 3 SP1 File Upload SLOW

So does anyone have a solution as to why publishing files using arrows is so slow? This is a FrontPage website and speed was not an issue until I installed SP1 for Expression Web 3. I looked thru menus to find a possible solution and no luck. I tried selecting/deselecting Passive FTP but it made no difference (Tools->Application Options->FTP Tab) to the speed.

For those who are having this problem, I noticed that if you navigate to the same folder on the Destination side then drag the file(s) over, the the speed is very fast (maybe faster than before). However this is a major annoyance because now I have to navigate up or down the folder tree for both the local and destination sites.

How can I reorganize my website files without destroying the website?

When I created the site I didn't have the best organization system to store the files so that they could easily be located and updated; my website files are one big jumble. I know that if I create new folders and manually organize the files for the site, I'll lose all links, pictures, etc.

How can I reorganize everything (for example all images into "Images" folder and the webpages into one folder)?

EE3 Screen Capture STOPPED WORKING

I'm recording a conference call for my manager. Everything is set up and it looks good. I launch Expression Encoder 3 Screen Capture, hit record, set my region for the whole screen, and maximize Office Communicator to record video of the shared desktop. We go through the call. Lots of good info. I should say lots of good info that is now LOST FOREVER because the Screen Capture tool inexplicably stopped recording 30 seconds in. No rhyme or reason. It just quit. Now I look like a weiner. I have never seen my manager look so disappointed. Is there any way I can ensure that this won't happen again?

I have a database that has several Yes or No fields. When I insert a Label control into my site and connect it to the Yes or No field it displays "True" for Yes and "False" for No. I would like to display them with the text Yes or No. Is there a way to do that?

ASP.NET Form

I am trying to create a feedback form. The one that I created with FrontPage was unprotected from spam feedback. It was my understanding that ASP.NET forms have validation controls that deal with that problem. But I have created a test form that views properly in Design View but after I save and then look at the page in a browser I can not view the page. Why isn't the ASP.NET runtime environment rendering the code as an HTML?

Just thought I would post some feedback on the expression web 3 that I have been trialing recently, and perhaps the issues I raise might be resolvable by the development team either now or in future versions?

Some things which appear to be missing that most competitor software such as dreamweaver and VS with VS.PHP do have.

No detection of written classes or functions and their child methods with intellisense.
all HTML has the red error line underneath when the file is a .php file, php files rarely have the <html> and <body> tags which is why the red error line is there.
As mentioned before PHP intellisense isn't automatic although the functionality is there, perhaps adding the ability to make it auto rather than ctrl+space everytime.
Since the SP release my uploading now is a lot slower to respond when I right click on a file and press publish to xxxxxx
also the original message where is had 'yes', 'yes to all', 'no', and 'cancel' was a lot better than the dialog which appears now (perhaps this is the cause of load speed issues)?
Right click on folder list gives opportunity to add html, aspx, asp, php, and css but no 'other..' to cover .js, .txt
.htaccess is ignored both on the remote ftp server and locally on the file list, bit of a faux pas for an editor claiming to be able to code with PHP.
There is a couple of code coloring settings such as throwing methods in the same box as PHP core functions which is a little annoying, but thats more personal preference.
I appreciate this is a tall ask, and probably not possible. But the previewer would be so much more amazing if IE6 and possibly safari was included?

Thats it really, if atleast the intellisense issue was addressed I would happily buy expression web 3, and expression design I love being able to easily cut PSDs up.

I opened the sampleEmbedCode.html with EW3. The flash player works fine so far when i press F12.
But I want to have the player in my "samples" page. Should I copy the codes from sampleEmbedCode.html to "Samples" ??? Because it doesn't work. Am I missing something?

FP server extensions

I have been using MS Front Page to manage my website www.dcneuro.net since the onset. Recently, I have been tyring to play with Expression, which appears to be much more difficult. My question is, how do I eliminate the FP server extensions using Expression, but continue to use my existing website so that I don't have to start creating from scratch. This would allow me to use FTP without screwing up my site, amongst other issues.

Hi you guys I am so new at designing webs that I do not what I am doing (LOL). I am creating a master page with Expression Web 3. I inserted a div that is going to be at the center of the page with an image as background; that works. I also created the codes and styles for my menu; the menu works well. My problem is that I cannot position the menu where I want inside the div on the background; it is always at the top. How can move the menu list around so I can position it at a certain spot. email form using GoDaddy

I am trying to have a form that a site visitor fills out emailed to the applicable addresses. I am using ASP.NET 2.0 and Expression Web 1. My host is GoDaddy. When I submit the form, I receive the following error - "Mailbox name not allowed. The server response was: sorry, your mail was administratively denied. (#5.7.1)."

EW 3 editing slow

I just installed EW 3 with sp1 and editing anything especially php scripts. When editing code it takes a few seconds for the characters to appear and scrolling with the mouse wheell is horrible. I never had this problem in EW2. I am going to have to go back to it if I can't get this fixed. I have unchecked the spell check as I type option but that has not helped.
If i open a file as text there is no lag at all with editing or scrolling.
I opened up the task manager and noticed whenever I am trying to use the mouse wheel to scroll up or down the cpu resources consumed by EW jump to over 25%
Any fix for this?

FYI, my comp is a AMD quad core phenom, 4 gigs ram, winxp 32bit

I would like to have the ability, for a restricted set of users, the ability to upload files to a password protected directory on the website www.troop152-beta.org. The full directory information is: http://www.troop152-beta.org/restricted-zone/html/login.htm [THIS IS CURRENTLT PASSWORD PROTECTED].

I would like to keep the process as simple as possible [not having ton setup a Network location or using a tool such as filezilla]. Is it possible to have the user [as an example] click on a link in the logon.htm and the link would open an IE or Mozilla window where they could drag and drop files into a directory?

If this is not possible, can someone point me in the direction of where I could find out how else this could be accomplished?

I am designing my first website where I want people to create a user name and password, and I am not able to figure it out. I am running Expression Web 3 and have found the aspx tool createuserwizard. What are the steps I need to do in order for this to work? any help will be appreciated.

Buttons fade to mouseover effect?

A button has 3 different pics. Can I make the pics fade between eachother?
When the mouse is over the button I want to have a glow effect. And I want it to slowly (0,2secs) to fade to the glow effect and not pop suddenly. I know how to do it in silverlight but I want to make my whole webpage in EW3.
