One advertising free one is Zoom Search, free for small sites, reasonable for others.

    Bill and Cheryl,

If they have a windows based server can they use an ASP.NET based search? I thought I saw that when I was mulling over changing my server to Windows. Just wondering.

Also my host offers HT dig on its non-windows accounts which I think is PHP based. I read that a lot of host's offer a search tool with the service. I was not too keen on the HTdig because its old and the creators of it are no longer supporting it but I may try it. At least it offers a site search without also including results or advertising from outside the site which I consider a real bad thing.

Just wondering if they are valid alternatives for the OP.

You can use ASP.NET or PHP to roll your own search.  Depending on the structure of the site and how the site's data is stored it may be too complex for a novice.

Bob. Let's get real. The OP's username is "thefrightenednewbie". The OP didn't do a Google search for a solution. Do you really think the OP is ready for anything other than a simple cut-and-paste solution? ASP.NET or PHP based search? Really? For this OP? That's why I didn't mention such things.

And to thefrightenednewbie: I don't mean the above as a dig at all; everybody's been there at one time or another. Everybody. But most people don't admit it by making it their username. ;-) Poke around and collect all the information you can find, then choose one that makes sense to you. And don't be frightened; c'mon back with more questions. One of these days you'll be able to change that user name.

    Bill,

I guess I am in trouble too. I was looking at some stuff that I was hoping was not much more than cut and paste since I doubt I am very much further along than the OP. Gee I only got my brain around CSS in the last few weeks. Comming from FP a lot of this stuff is new to me and the search issue is one dear to me now along with sitemap and a few other things. I got those ideas about ASP.NET and such here on this forum and Cheshires book but if they are complex they are probably out of my zone of competence.

I will look at the solution you mentioned since I need a simple answer as well.

    Thanks

    Bob

If that's the case Bob then look at the Google Site Search.  Its the cut-and-paste option you're looking for.

Add Google Search to your website:

    Chris,

Thanks for the link. The google site search has a modest fee if you dont want ads and looks rather easy to implement- literaly copy and paste so even I can do it. The OP should be able to use this and anyone else who needs a simple solution as well. It also looks like you can set it up a number of ways to look good on a site.

    Thanks again
