Inserting flv Video File - Need Help

This is my first attempt at inserting a flv file onto my webpage. Please excuse my newbie-ness here, but when I go to Insert>Media and the choices of Flach or Silverlight or Windows Media Player come up, none of those options are allowing me to select the flv file. None of those options are recognizing the flv file. Can you tell me what other details you need in order to help. Also, the file is 28 mb - 11 minutes in length. What problems, if any, might I run into running this on my site?

You converter program should have the option to spit out the html to embed in the page. If not use something like http://www.web-flv-player.com/ (free version is all you really need.)

Thank you for response. Can you explain what "converter program" means? I am trying to use the tools within Expression Web 2. I started with a DVD, converted it to flv with Adobe Premiere Elements 7.

Does EW2 not read this type of file? Should I convert the DVD to another format in order for it to work with the windows player in EW2? Thank you.

What you want as an output is an SWF file so you can embed it.

If you want to use the FLV file then you will need a 'player' as Cheryl pointed out.

Don't put DVD formated movies on the web. You cannot rely on your site visitors having the correct codec, plus the size/quality is too much for web use. If your web site is hosted with a company that has a streaming server then use the format supported by that server *usually streaming flash - flv or windows media - wmv.

Then you can the appropriate player for either Flash or wmv (if you use wmv encode it for silverlight streaming which in my experience as given better quality for file size).

Yikes. This is all very confusing to me. It sounds like what you are saying is that there is not a point and click way of uploading my flv file to my page via Microsoft Expression Web 2? What is the difference between a swf and a flv file?

flv is a streaming format that starts playing as soon as part of it downloads and swf is not - requires the entire file to download before it will play.

Thank you for the explanation. I was able to change the format of the DVD to wmvembed it in the player and upload it. But my question now is what do I need to do different in order for the video to also be viewable on a Mac?

Export as SWF and embed that or export as FLV and get a Flash Player (like the Wimpy one I pointed out) and that would give your video the best chance to be viewed by the most people.

Cheryl D Wise,

I know this is an old post but I have a related question. Is ther a way to get the SWF file to play as soon as it starts downloading with Expression Web? Flash videos with the SWF and FLV seperated stream fine. Straight SWF does not.

I was using Frontpage and this was not a problem before. I don't want to have to re-render all of my SWF files to seperate the player from the FLV if there is a work around.

Post a link to your page so we can see how you are delivering your swf file. Remember with a swf the entire file must download before it starts to play. That is why you see preloaders used with them.

Below is a link to one of my videos that has the self contained FLV inside the SWF file. I have played with object setting some in Expression but those don't seem to affect the streaming aspects. There are some others SWF files which call the outside FLV that start downloading much quicker.
