Excellent, Steve! Thank you. I have added both the post in full and the URL to the thread to EverNote, to be able to point those with installation issues to it in the future. We've been rather at a loss as to where to advise them to look since the change to the support page, and this will help tremendously. Thanks again!

    cheers,
    scott

    Steve:

Before I change the link about installation problems in the "Before Posting..." sticky, what is the status of phone tech support? It used to be free for installation problems (and still is in the UK, as I understand). Has that changed? Is there no more free phone support for installation problems?

    Steve:

I'm trying to install Expression Web 2 on XP Pro.  I'm running into the first error you list:  “Error -2147024873 during Expression Studio 2 or Expression Web 2 install”

However, when I follow the link, it requires me to have an Office 2007 repair disk.

I don't have  MS Office 2007.  VS 2008 and Expression Studio install the minimum Office components required, so I should not need to have Office.  Office is also not listed as a prerequisite for Expression Web 2.

How can I get around this problem to get Web Expression to install?

    Thanks

    Mike

    Mike:

The first posts in this forum (this one and the one named "Before Posting...") are for visitor/user background information, not for problem solving as such. They always stay up here, but aren't usually monitored. If people need help and can't find it after searching the forum, they should start a new thread.

The last link in the first post above will take you to a source for help via e-mail.

    NOTE: TRIAL KEY PROBLEMS:

If you have downloaded Expression Web 2 for a trial and can't find the activation key, here's the solution...

As of July 10, Microsoft is moving to promoting Expression Web 3, whose debut is delayed by a few weeks. Unfortunately, they have removed the page with the trial key for EW2. There is a page on the MS UK site that will work.

    Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/expression/productkey.aspx

Expression Web 3's new release date is projected to be August 13. So if you are looking to buy Expression Web, it might be a good idea to wait until then to get the new version with some significant added features.

Thanks Bill, but I just clicked the link from the version 2 download page and it took me to the product key page for v2 just fine:

    http://www.microsoft.com/expression/productkey.aspx

Maybe there was a temporary glitch or the page was mistakenly taken down?

Anna, for several days the "product key" link redirected to the Expression Web 3 page, not to a product key page.  There are several recent threads resulting from that.  The link has since been fixed.

    Symptoms:

    1) When running the setup of any of the Expression Programs ( ie Blend, Web, etc), the setup may end consuming all the available memory
and cpu resources are over utilized.

    2) The Splash Window of the Expression installer will not redraw correctly showing a corrupted image and sluggish performance.

    2) When designing a WPF  application in Visual Studio 2008, you will notice that moving control around the window panel,
    cpu resources are over utilized.

    3) When running a WPF application over the Internet (ie: Telerik WPF Demo), cpu resources are over utilized.

These problems were observed in a computer with the following specifications:

    Motherboard: ASUS K8V-MX
Graphic Chipset:  VIA / S3GP K8M800/K8N800 UniChrome Pro integrated graphics.
    Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 512KB, Socket 754
OS: Windows XP SP3 Professional, retail
    Memory: 2 GB DDR DRAM

    Solution:

Disable DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration in the Control Panel, Display Applet, TroubleShoot, move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the 3rd mark.

    Good luck,
    Marcel

    Steve.

I'm having trouble installing Expression Web 2.  The CD/DVD drive does not seem to recognize the disk.  The drive works fine otherwise (plays music, uploads programs, etc).  I do NOT have pre-installed Microsoft Office 2007 programs on my computer.  I DO have pre-installed MS Office 2003 programs, and 2007 programs that I bought and installed separately, but those should not be an issue.

I would very much like to start using the software to build my website (switching over from Frontpage 2003), but I cannot get started because Expression Web 2 refuses to install.  I have sent at least half a dozen emails to your support staff and have received only automated replies in return, none of which have been helpful.  Nor can I find something as simple as a toll-free number to call for help.  I spent $300 on this software -- which may not sound like much to a multi-billion dollar company like Microsoft, but which is a considerable sum to me.

I find it very disconcerting that Microsoft does not offer free technical support for something as simple as installation of its software.  Please provide me with an email address with an actual person on the other end, or with a phone number I can call for technical assistance from an actual human being.

In general I find Microsoft products very useful, but my experience this time around has been very negative.  My dominant impression is of a huge and arrogant company that thinks it's too big and powerful to offer free technical support to its loyal customers.  Please disabuse me of this impression.

    Thank you,

    Mike in PA

    Mike:
This isn't an active thread. It's for reference only, with links to sources of help for installation problems. Steve hasn't posted here in over 2 months.

Did you send an e-mail with the details to ewinstal@microsoft.com with the info listed in the first post? What did they say?

Have you tried the disk in another computer? Does that computer recognize it? If not, it may be bad and needs to be returned for warranty/exchange.
Is it really a CD/DVD drive? The EW disk is a DVD and won't work in a CD drive (people have made that mistake).

    Bill,

Thanks for that.  After half a dozen emails to ewinstal@microsoft.com, I finally did get an actual phone number and speak with several actual human beings; especially helpful was Will in Dallas, TX, who was instrumental in getting the thing to actually install.  (Though why Microsoft would use a DVD format instead of a CD format for their installation disk is beyond me; equally baffling is why their DVD tutorial does not work on a regular DVD player that's hooked up to a TV; nor does it work on a CD-ROM disk drive on a computer; the thing is by all appearances useless without a CD/DVD disk drive on a computer, as is the installation disk; Will in Dallas TX had to walk me through downloading the software from Microsoft's website using the product key code that came with the product I'd purchased off the shelf because it just wouldn't install off the disk).

Unduly cumbersome and time-consuming, exceedingly difficult to get technical support, but in the end a good and effective product:  this was my experience this time around with Microsoft.

Why does it say Steve's the "Moderator" at the top of this "Forum" if in fact he's no such thing?  If Steve hasn't posted in two months, then what does the "moderator" of this "forum" actually do?  See what I mean?  Sort of reminds me of a Kafka novel.

    Buena suerte a todos,

    Mike in PA

    Glad it worked.

Microsoft uses a DVD because a CD won't hold all the data. DVDs hold lots more. Many programs use DVDs for installation discs, not just Microsoft's.

A DVD hooked up to a TV isn't designed to read computer discs, nor will it read Blu-Ray discs. Different formats. That's not Microsoft's fault.

Steve is A moderator, not THE moderator. Anna, who posted above is also shown as a moderator, as are Lori and Will and Anita, etc. This isn't a moderated forum; it's just user-to user; it doesn't need a moderator. That's why the URL is http://SOCIAL.espression.microsoft.com. Those moderators pop in every few days to see if they can help, but on a day-to-day basis, we're on our own.

There's another, general purpose post here named BEFORE POSTING--. I've included the installation hints that we've learned through the process (including Steves above), but I don't know if the download idea is in there (we've certainly recommended it often enough). I'll check and add it if it's not.

So when you have questions, c'mon back. There are some great people who volunteer a lot of time in here and give really good advice.

Microsoft used a DVD because they also include 2 hours of tutorials on the disk.

    Well, check this out...

I solved my problem from a post in this thread... http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.expression.discussion&tid=d332fade-76c1-4b6a-8d5b-b2684d32dc11&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1

    and you wont beleive it!!!!

minimize the setup app to solve the problem!!!

repair seems to takes forever so i ran uninstall and the reinstalled in less than 20 mins by minimizing the setup window after starting it!!!
OMG, aint that a good one!!!

with the setup window visible my page file usage kept climbing and my available physical memory kept declining. i would ultimately get an out of memory error. with the setup window minimized the page file usage did not increase and the available physical memory stayed steady.

also, with setup window visible the cpu usage was pretty much at 100% and hung around 35% when setup was minimized.

Thanks for the tip Bradley - and how funny!  It worked for me as well with V3.  Tried multiple times to install the program and the installer would stick after barely starting and never move.

I minimized it immediately upon starting it, and poof, a few minutes later it was installed.

    Easter Egg or serious glitch?

The developers have fixed this and the fix will be releaed in the nonEnglish versions of Expression Web...the fix for the English version will go in the free service pack we're releasing later this year. Will Buffington from the Support team put up a good post on this:

This is NOT an active thread, as it says above. It's a "sticky" thread (as denoted by the sticky-note papers on the left of the title). Stickies always stay at the top for easy reference. It's for reference only--leading to sources of help for installation problems.

In the very first post (and others) are instructions on how to contact Microsoft for free help with installation problems.

Please do not post to this thread.

Have a problem with installation? Follow the instructions in the very first post above and send the information to Microsoft's installation tech support address.
