- My install problem from above has been solved:
It turned out my .NET Framework was corrupt in some way. What I did was uninstall the framework completely. The restart and run a program called ".net cleanup tool", do a search to find it. After this I installed .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5 and the latest .NET 3.5.1 service pack (but just install the latest versions whatever they are when you might be reading this). The cleanup tool may not be necessary, but at least uninstalling and then re-installing the framework .
After doing this everything is working peachy on my machine, installed fine and my event viewer is working again too.- Marked As Answer byAnna UllrichMSFT, ModeratorMonday, July 27, 2009 6:13 PM

- Just to be clear, this is a user-to-user forum, not MS Tech support. We're mostly just Expression Web users like you. Most people here haven't installed Expression Web 3 yet, and we have no access to data that would tell us what some of those code numbers mean. The people who have installed it have done so only on their own computer.
There's no reason not to post here; Microsoft staffers stop by once in a while. But you should also explore other support options. - Just FWIW, Bill's giving you the straight skinny. We're almost all, save a moderator or two, simply users of the product, and since the trial only became available Monday the 20th, even those who have installed it have little experience with it yet. Furthermore, those who, like myself, installed without a hitch, will have nothing to offer from our personal experience.
Ask away, if you wish. Just remember that we know as little as you do about these installation issues, and we can take neither credit nor blame for whether your installation goes smoothly or otherwise. You really need to hie thee to a support forum (GOK where that might be) to ask actual MS support people these kinds of questions.
cheers,
scott Remember that there is a sticky at the very top of the forum that tells you how to get install support from MS. That may be your best option.
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes- I thought about that, too. But after a moment's reflection I decided not to recommend that link to installation support. It is, after all, for the purchased version of EW2. AFAIK, there is no similar offering for the EW2 trial, and since EW3 at the moment is nothing but the trial, I'm thinking that perhaps that offering might not go anywhere, at least until the shipping version hits the streets/ Could be wrong, of course... ;-)
cheers,
scott - I figure someone has to try it out. <g>
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes - Just FYI for everyone: I'm reading all these posts and I'll start an EW3 section in the BEFORE POSTING sticky this weekend with all the best hints/tricks/links, etc. (such as they are).
Unfortunately, my computer won't run EW3 as it misses 2 of the basic requirements (video card and memory). Bummer. So I'm shopping for a new computer this weekend too. (I've been looking for a while anyway; no sense throwing money into a 5-year old computer even though it's been a super reliable work horse). - My install problem from above has been solved:

- Thanks, Eric, for the information for the archives.
Bill, now you've got your first real confirmed solution for an EW3/64-bit installation problem. Off to a good start. ;-)
cheers,
scott - Yeah, I had a hunch it was a .NET problem because EW2 and 3 have that in common, yet other major parts of them are very different in their setup. Plus, Office installed fine.
I'll work on the updates to the sticky after the forum gets updated this evening (which I REALLY HOPE fixes the huge-text/wasted-screen-real-estate issue that happened in the update of July 10). Really hope. - Remember that Expression 3 has less Office code in it than any other version. For instance you can't install Office 2010 beta if you have Expression Web 2 installed but my understanding is that it will install with Expression Web 3 but i haven't tested myself yet.
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes - EricThanks so much for posting. Running the setup on Vista ultimate (x32) was throwing an exception that I could not find documented anywhere.I'm afraid I don't have it recorded or I would post it for the benefit of others. There was a little voice in the back of my head saying, "We might want to update .net framework", but my rational side was saying,"We don't just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, and besides, they're both microsoft products, surely it would throw an ERROR message ...."FWIW, the updates I needed were queued up in windows update, so this is a problem that for most people will resolve itself it would seem. [I didn't need to uninstall]On another note, at the risk of alienating seemingly establisted posters on a forum I will no doubt soon be needing further help on --Bill, Cheryl, Paladun -- your responses in this thread had a chilling effect on my eagerness to post my problem in particular, and to seek help here in general. [And no doubt, many others, because this listing was #1 on google for me]. I'm sure that's not really what you want, right? We don't have to be official subject matter experts to help each other, all it takes is just a dab of experience sometimes. There are many examples of user to user forums that provide better support than the official product support, in a more public, more timely, and more efficient manner. [If you really feel the need to confirm this for yourself, http://forums.sagetv.com]. I hope that this critiscism is taken in the spirit that it is meant, which is, for the benefit of all concerned.Eric, thanks so much for posting your experience, it was really beneficial to me, and I hope my experience can be beneficial to somebody else.thanks,CoryEDIT: There is a similar related thread with many of the same posters and subject matter, and this really should have been posted in THAT thread, but, on returning, this is the one I found.
bluenote - Cory,I don't see how my post should discourage anyone when all I said is that v2 has enough office code in it that it can't be installed with the beta of the next version while v3 has a different code base. The ability to install Office 2007/earlier has nothing to to with the ability to install Expression Web 3 (or even 2 for that matter since there are a lot of differences between the two.)
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes Cheryl, I'm wondering if he was referring to your earlier post,
"Remember that there is a sticky at the very top of the forum that tells you how to get install support from MS. That may be your best option."
but why that, and the similar posts by Bill and Scott, would have a "chilling effect on" someone's "eagerness to ... seek help here in general" is beyond me.
A factual explanation that this forum is not a place to expect technical support for installation problems, other than the lucky happenstance of another user recognizing the same problem, is just that. And all three posts were perfectly polite about it. <Shrug>- Thanks, Kathy. I don't know how any of those posts could have a chilling effect on anyone seeking help.
But on the larger point...I have started the EW3 thread in the BEFORE POSTING stick at top and I'll monitor the forum and update the sticky as new discoveries are made. - Kathy,Could be but I still don't understand why pointing to a post on how to get install support should be chilling.
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes - Sure, those posts were perfectly polite. And the implication was, that it was useless, possibly stupid, and probably unwanted to post problems like this here.If you want to pretend that wasn't the subtext, I won't argue with you. It's what I got out of it.It would have been nice if instead of telling people to go to support, you might have offered a suggestion.Thats what forums are for, if you ask me.
bluenote - "Calling Captain Subtext!"
Seriously? Subtext? If you looked for a minute at the thousands of questions that have been answered in here by a group of really swell volunteers, I don't see how you could suggest that.
"There's no reason not to post here; Microsoft staffers stop by once in a while. But you should also explore other support options."
"Furthermore, those who, like myself, installed without a hitch, will have nothing to offer from our personal experience. Ask away, if you wish. Just remember that we know as little as you do about these installation issues..."
How can statements like that--that do nothing more than try to set the expectation level 4 days after a new product is introduced as a trial--make anyone feel that they shouldn't post a question?
The history of this forum--its 5,000+ threads, 34,000+ responses, and countless thousands of hours of volunteer work on behalf of users with questions--flies in the face of that assertion.- Proposed As Answer byCenfus Thursday, November 19, 2009 12:11 PM
