QuestionCannot connect to web server from EW2/Win 7

I just installed 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and EW 3. 3 worked fine for me under 32 bit Vista however it crashes very freguently under Win 7. I then installed EW 2 in hopes that it would be more stable. When i try to Publish via http from EW2 instead of getting the EW2 dialog for user name and password i get the Windows Security dialog box. This box appears to not be passing information through to the web server. Every time i press OK the box refreshes itself. No error message, just asks for the information again, and again, and again, until i get tired of the game.

If i try ftp I do get the standard EW2 dialog box however once again the informaiton does not appear to be getting passed to the web server.

If i crank up EW3 then i can publish to the server. This tells me it is not a problem with the web server but something that is going on between EW2 and Win 7.

Worst case scenario is that i do all the development work in EW2 and publish via EW3 but that is a stooooopid work around.

Double check that EW2 is not being blocked by the windows 7 firewall it uses a different FTP client than EW3.

Personally, l use EW3 to publish anyway since it has a much better FTP client.

I have the Windows 7 firewall turned off and am using the same one that i did before moving from Vista to Windows 7. I would like to use EW3 if the fool thing did not crash so often. I am casting around to see if it is a 64 bit Win 7 problem or just a general Win 7 issue.

The correct way to troubleshoot this is to grab a network capture with Netmon or Wireshark and use that to find out what's failing.

I had to uninstall Expression Web 2 on Vista because it conflicted with some other software (beta) that I am running so I never had a chance to attempt to publish with it. Other than the lack of customization/dark interface I prefer v3.

First question, Cheryl are you using 32 or 64 bit Vista? I had no problem with EW3 and 32 bit Vista however with 64 bit Win 7 EW3 crashes a LOT.

After exchanging 4 emails with Windows 7 support they now suggest i:

    1.    Click start, type regedit in search box and press enter.

    2.    Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

    3.    Right-click in an open space and create a new DWORD key.

    4.    Type MaxConnectionsPerServer as the name of the new DWORD key.

    5.    Right-click this key and select modify.

    6.    Set the base to decimal and enter a value of 1.  Press ok when you're done.

    7.    Create another new DWORD key and type MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server as the name. Right-click this key and select modify.

    8.    Set the base to decimal and enter the new value. Use the same value as the first key. Click ok when finished.

    9.    Exit the registry editor and reboot.

To restore it.  Just change the numbers to 2 or greater. Like a sensible "10"

I cannot believe that everyone using EW2 has to do this every time they publish to the web.

Umm, did you happen to look at the Supported Operating Systems list for Expresssion Web v.2? Did you see 64-bit Windows 7 in that list somewhere?

    Just sayin'...

    cheers,

    Plural's don't have apostrophe's. It seem's sometime's that any word's ending in "s" get a gratuitous apostrophe. Apostrophe's are used to indicate possessive's and elision's (contraction's or abbreviation's).

It works for me in both 32-bit and 64-bit. What I've tested since the release of EW3 / Win7 on two different machines is
     - clean install of Win 7 32-bit (build 7100): both EW2 and EW3 worked flawlessly
     - reimaged drive back to Vista Premium 32-bit: EW2 and EW3 worked without issue
     - upgrade from Vista 32-bit to Win 7 32-bit (build 7100): both continued to work without issue
     - install of EW2 and EW3 on Vista Premium 64-bit: both worked with no issues
     - upgrade from Vista Premium 64-bit to Win7 64-bit (retail): both continued to work without issue

Tested all the functions I normally use to include FTP to both local linix server and to live site.
The only thing I haven't tested is a clean install of Win7 64-bit as my intent was to determine what hurdles I would have to jump in order to get Win7 to work on the systems we have. In none of the above tests did I have to tweak anything to get either EW2 or EW3 to work as expected.

EW 2 worked without issue for me in Vista Ultimate 64 for well over a year. Anything that lists Vista as a compatible operating system must work on both 32 and 4 bit versions. I've had the discussion as a result of some other vendor software and that was the information I received from Microsoft.
