When trying to move my remote web site to my local hard drive. I keep getting a server timed out message. I was on the phone with my host and they said it wasn't the server or the FP extensions. Is there any help here for this? I would be much grateful

Try switching between active and passive ftp, sometimes you must use a specific mode. See: http://by-expression.com/content/faq.aspx#ftp3 for how to switch modes in Expression Web.

Do you have any files larger than 1 mb on the site?
If so you need to FTP:// the large files as there is a 1 mb limit for publishing
    files with http://

Good cache Steve, I didn't see that the OP was using FPSE to publish, just thought it was the typical ftp mode issue.

This fix did not work for me.  Anyone able to help?  I also tried opening the website in EW2.0 via http, and deleting temp files, but no go.  It seems to be hanging on the "Listing pages in...." step.  I can publish if I republish the entire site, but it takes forever, and I often error out after quite a while.

We need a little more info.

    What did not work?
Did the site open using the http:// address.?
Deleting what temp files, where and how?

Can you post a link to the site?

    Thanks for trying to help.

When I try to publish, It logs in, opens the site, and starts "Listing files in..."
after about 3 seconds, it errors out "Server "" timed out. Unable to publish..."

It opens when I do FILE|OPEN SITE fine.
One other thread mentions FILE|OPEN SITE|SITE|SITE SETTINGS|Advanced|Delete TEmp files.
      It does nothing.

Up til 3 weeks ago, this whole shebang was working just fine.  I was even starting to learn something about XML PHP and Javascript!

I too have this problem.  I get the error after about 3 mins. or about 10mb of files.  The Host has already reloaded Front Page Extension.  I do not get the error if I select multiple files form the local folders and then copy them(publish) to the remote location.  But this work around is annoying as I cannot publish a full web site.  And it does not remove the items from the site update list.

Easy answer: Stop using Front Page Extensions. Seriously. They haven't been supported by Microsoft for over 3 years, hosting services are dropping them like hot rocks, and they break all the time.

Use FTP; you're going to have to switch sooner or later as FPSEs disappear, might as well do it now.

There is a maximum file size that the FPSE can handle. I don't remember what it is but if you posted over on the FP newsgroup I'm sure someone there would be able to tell you. (Probably Stefan)

Steve said earlier in the thread that the FPSE limit was 1.0 MB, which by current standards ain't exactly a whole lot. A single oversize PDF in one of your folders could probably cause the symptoms being observed. Best bet is to do as recommended earlier and ditch the FPSE post haste. They're dated anyway, and there's not a thing they do that can't be accomplished with modern methods.

    cheers,

    Plural's don't have apostrophe's. It seem's sometime's that any word's ending in "s" get a gratuitous apostrophe. Apostrophe's are used to indicate possessive's and elision's (contraction's or abbreviation's).

That is fine but how do I make the Site Search feature work without font page extensions.  I know I can FTP the files but that won't support the site search.

    Thanks

EW will stall at Listing files in... if you have copied a file into your web outside of EW and have not refreshed the file listing so EW knows the file is there.

There is no fixed maximum size. My site still uses FP extensions, total size 600MB, with 250MB in the root web.

The size limit is set by hardware, server loading and network connections. A heavily loaded server with minimal RAM and slow CPU will time out with a much smaller site than a lightly loaded server with lots of RAM and several fast multicore CPUs, and a slow connection adds to the speed problem.

Dividing the site into subwebs, and publishing each subweb individually will reduce the time required for processing the meta data in the website during publishing, resulting in fewer time outs.

The 1.0MB refers to the default maximum file size that can be uploaded. This maximum can be configured in the extensions. My host allows uploads of individual files over 10MB, though I use FTP for large files.

"That is fine but how do I make the Site Search feature work without font page extensions. "

Use one of the many other search products, such as Pico, Atomz, or even Google that integrate into your site.
