Proposed AnswerInserting an Olympus video into a webpage

    Hi everyone,
This is my first time using this process so forgive me if I trample upon anyones feet... I am using Microsoft Expression Web as my website design tool. I am trying to load a video, shot on an Olympus camera onto one of my webpages...the video size is 175mb. I have tried to insert it, copy and paste it and click and drag it....all to no avail. Nowhere on the help or search functions can I find anything about uploading video to a webpage...since there is video on webpages all over the web, there must be an easy way to do so. I would appreciate any time and help you can provide.
    Regards,
    Phil

What format is the video? Do you want to play it in a browser player or link to it and have it d/l and play in the user's handler application? Do you have any idea how long it will take to download a 175 MB video? (hint: a helluva long time, even on broadband; forget dial-up) Do you want to stream it instead? Does your provider account support streaming video?

Oh, and just because there are videos all over the Web does NOT mean that there's "... an easy way to do so." There are hundreds of thousands of airline flights a week, but not just anyone can pilot a commercial airliner, or design one.

    cheers,
    scott

Before explaining adding video the question is what do you expect to have the video do?  Do you want users to watch a 175M video on your website?  If you do, they never will as its over 10x too large for that.  If you want them to download, then zip up and offer them a zip file to download.

    Thanks Scott,

The format is AVI and the video is a 'how to' video. I would like it to upload quickly in a viewers window...how would I go about setting this up as a streaming video? What would be the best way to do something such as this?

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Thanks Chris,

As I told Scott, the movie format is AVI...the file size is primarily do to picture quality as total length is under 3 minutes. I would like to give them the option of clicking on a picture and have something to play in a couple seconds. It is a video of a demonstration. Does Expression web allow me to make a zip file or do I upload an already made zip file and then insert? What would be the best way to do this?
    Thanks...

    Regards,

    Phil

I would convert the avi file to either a streaming flash file (flv) or encode it using Silverlight (which in my experience has lead to smaller file sizes so that's what I use for my video tutorials on http://by-expression.com) then insert it in a page and also make it available for download. You can use the trial version of Expression Encoder to convert to streaming silverlight (and depending on size even host it on the free silverlight hosting then just embed in your page). If you go the Flash route there are plenty of free and low cost flv encoders available.

I've also converted a few to ipod format as well.

    Thanks Cheryl,

I will look in to both of those ideas Friday as tomorrow I will be gone.

Your video (175 MB for 3 minutes) is roughly 1 megabyte per second to playback. A DSL connection is 1.3 to 1.5 megaBITS per second. In order to stream that video "in a couple seconds", a person would need a connection at least 6-10 times as fast (allowing for code overhead). In a couple of seconds, a DSL-connected computer would have received about 1/4 second of the video and the instant they click play, they'd be out of material. You're gonna need one honkin' dedicated server, too.

You cannot expect that video to stream.

I don't know what it's a demonstration of, but does it need to be full screen?

Expression Web is not a video production program nor a zipping program. You need to find a program that will convert the program into a more compact format. AVI won't compress much, so zipping it won't really help. A 175MB file would take about 20-25 minutes to download. That better be a spectacular 3 minutes of video for anyone to put that much time into.

175M for 3min?   You should re-encode the video to a different format.  There is no reason, if with quality, to have a 3min video that large.  I would first go to a video forum and get some advice on re-encoding the video, then work with in EW.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the re-encode link. Of course there is now new questions...First, the screen size could adequately be addressed in a 4 x 5 or 4 x 6 area. What would you suggest? Next, what video format would you suggest changing this to? Does this link:  ://www.tmpgenc.net/en/index.html  which you gave me allow me re-encode, change format and screen size? Never having needed to do this before probably is causing a tad bit of confusion on my part. Does when I re-encode...or the process of re-encoding...allow me to change format and screen size? I will await your next reply. Thank you for your time.

    Regards,

    Phil

This is way outside the scope of website design.  You would be far better off asking in a video forum.

As far as re-encoding with Tmpgenc just download the free version and play around with it.

Roughly 100px to an inch but remember that people don't always use default settings.
