Trial will not install on Vista 64
Trial will not install on Vista 64
- Hello, I have a brand new install of Vista 64bit. It's a Core i7 system, 6GB RAM, totally decked out and fast as can be in every respect.
When I go to install EW3 Trial I immediately get an error that says "Microsoft Expression Web Setup has stopped working". And then an option to close the dialog box. No splash screen nothing, just dead in the water.
!!!! I've really been looking forward to EW3 and can't wait to purchase. But if the trial will not install, I'm assuming the real deal will not install either. Please help! I can't purchase until I know it will actually install.

- Ok, I figured out my problems and here's what the solution was (problem was that Expression suite would NOT install and along with that some MMC snap-ins were not working properly on my machine).
It turned out my .NET Framework was corrupt in some way. What I did was uninstall the framework completely. The restart and run a program called ".net cleanup tool", do a search to find it. After this I installed .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5 and the latest .NET 3.5.1 service pack (but just install the latest versions whatever they are when you might be reading this). The cleanup tool may not be necessary, but at least uninstalling and then re-installing the framework .
After doing this everything is working peachy on my machine, installed fine and my event viewer is working again too.
And I don't care about the posts above, a user forum is the IDEAL place to ask for technical assistance and related questions regarding the software product we're talking here. Even if MS doesn't read the board at all other users may have similar problems and then find a solution from another member. For example, if I see someone having install problems I'll be able to offer them the option to reinstall the .NET Framework for example. So bla bla bla :)- Marked As Answer byAnna UllrichMSFT, ModeratorMonday, July 27, 2009 6:45 PM

- This is User to User forum, not a Microsoft Tech Support forum.
The ony thing I can say is that it installed just fine on my Vista 64 bit, and on my Win XP. - Did you / do you have a beta version of EW 3 installed?
Have you checked the system event logs for an error?
Did you right click the downloaded exe and click Unblock.
Did you right click the .exe and select Run as administrator?
FrontPage MVP - What's strange is now that I try Expresison Web 2 to install just for fun it errors out in the exact same way when I try to install it. So does the other Expression studio products from V2 and V3. And even stranger, when I go to my event viewer it says "can't load snap-in". Some of the snap-ins work, but some don't. Event viewer, task schedular for example don't work.
Other software and MS software, Office etc seem to start installing just fine. What's unique about the Expresison Studio products that might be causing a problem? Their installer interface has movement and is fancier than most other installers, could this be a hint?
*I tried your suggestions above with no luck.
While maybe a user forum, it's not like there's an Expression Studio tech forum...this is it! - Did you first install the .NET Framework 3.5 and its SP1?
I thought of that since ver 2 won't install either. - I've been running Expression Web 3 on Vista Ultimate 64 for a long time. The live meeting I did last week was done on Vista 64 bit. I installed the trial yesterday and had no problems. Untinstalled it today and installed the whole Studio from MSDN (the only difference is that I have an activated version instead of the unactivated trial) and again no problems.
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes - I have no doubt it will work for most people, just some software combination or little detail I'm sure that's causing a problem.
FYI: When installing EW2 on a a different Windows 7 RC computer the ONLY way I could get it to install was to change the system colors down to 16 bit. And then after install change it back. That took me hours to figure out.
In my opinion there's something very unique to the Expression installer in V2 & V3 that other software doesn't do. Silverlight or something to that effect? I know this is user forum, but again it's not there's another palce to speak to knowledagable MS support staff....like impossible I belive, right? - "but again it's not there's another palce to speak to knowledagable MS support staff"
I think we're trying to make the point that this isn't a place you can do that, either. You may luck out and have a problem that a knowledgeable user recognizes, but that doesn't appear to be the case for the problem you are describing. - " I know this is user forum, but again it's not there's another palce to speak to knowledagable MS support staff....like impossible I belive, right?"
And it hasn't changed because you're posting here. With one or two exceptions (Anna and Lori), very few MS employees frequent the forum at all, period. And neither Lori nor Anna, nor most of the others who pop in very rarely, are support staff.
None of us hoi polloi are. We are civilians, and although we may be knowledgeable in certain aspects such as HTML and CSS, or the use of those technologies in development, or the use of EW, that does not make us Microsoft support staff. It certainly doesn't make us capable of remotely diagnosing what it is that is unique about your particular configuration that is causing your issues. Absent any other evidence to the contrary, that is what your problems are pointing to, and that is something you are going to have to track down.
Pretty much everything that we know or can suggest about installation problems is gathered into the stickies posted at the top of the thread list. I suggest you check them, and if the answer is not there, try Connect or something, because you will have at that point have pretty much exhausted the potential here.
cheers,
scott - To add, if you want to make sure your issue gets to MS go to http://connect.microsoft.com and file a bug.
MS MVP Expression Tutorials & Help http://by-expression.com and online instructor led Expression Classes - I just installed it on Vista Ultimate x64 that was installed about a month ago, but is fully loaded with assorted apps. Setup worked just fine for me. Check and make sure you have the latest video drivers. As goofy as that sounds, sometimes a new installer cause an issue in the screen paint function if an older driver is running. I use the vendor drivers to make sure i'm up to date and not the ones from windows update. Also, try disabling UAC by going to Start | Run | type msconfig | then select Tools | scroll down to disable UAC | click the launch button. Reboot then give it a try. Sometimes the UAC dialog dies or "burps" during an install.
- And to reiterate what I posted in another similar thread (because the forum kept throwing up a "trouble" message when I tried to post here a couple of hours ago)--I'm keeping watch on the EW 3 installation threads and will add a new section (with helpful tips as they emerge) to the BEFORE POSTING sticky at the top of the forum this weekend.

Great! Now all we have to do is figure out a way to get people to actually read the bloody things before posting, no? ;-)
Hey, I'm encouraged that some, at least, are reading them. I've noticed a definite increase in the number of folks who provide a link to their problem pages in their first post. Not 100%; we'll probably never get there, just due to pure human cussedness. But definitely a majority anymore, seems to me, so your efforts are bearing fruit, Bill. ;-)

.net again ... lol
p{margin:0} is disabling indent increase and decrease on my system (and countless other EW bugs) - for sure the woes started with latest Vista 64 SP2 (and a glut of microsoft mail encouraging upgrade to Win 7 (21st century market - how to make my webs fit that model?)). i say "latest Vista 64 SP2" because several prior installs did not excite that mail glut or this host of bizarre application faults on those new machine installs. this does not rule out dotNET or AJAX add-ons, avoid anything with one thousand google entries on the first 100 pages of an app search for my expression ?
another time the EW Team helped with a .net corruption [windows update issue, just before i bought Vista 64] i was advised not to use the Microsoft dot net removal tool and pointed somewhere else !!! i can't remember who was that 3rd party - this is the part where managing my Expression software really twists my gut - what if i fix it wrong ?
well another fresh Vista 64 install here on a new 8 gb machine - did download EW3 to see if EW was receiving the suspected Win7 treatment, but no, EW3 also corrupted - ummm - so where to dl Dot Net Removal Tool (yep, she's gaining popularity) ? looking at this whole issue with one blind eye ?? i thought expression tech would fix my goggles !
all @ once dot-dot- following Aaron Stebbner's .NET uninstall and reinstall, p elements, images and list elements will increase and decrease indent, however using the indent command on text content of a div tag results a jump of the cursor from the end of a text line to the beginning of the div closing tag in code view, and at the same time the entire design view indents 3 tabs for p, image and list and two tabs for everything else
