Can I work live, online with Expression Web like I could with Frontpage?
- In frontpage, I could open a website in the program and make changes to it live, without having to publish everything I did to see if the changes worked properly. I could publish back to my local server at the end of the session.
Is this possible in Expression Web?

Yes. with or without frontpage extensions it is possible to edit live with EW.
Not recommended but possible.

- It's possible, but it isn't recommended practice. It's far safer to work locally, preview the local changes in browsers to check that things are working properly, then publish. That way your in-the-middle-of-a-change and uncorrected mistakes won't be live, too.
- Expression Web has a built-in testing server that will allow you to preview pages and test them locally even if they include ASP.NET or PHP code working locally. This is the recommended method of creating and testing web pages. When you work live on the server any errors or problems that occur are visible to anyone visiting your website.
That is why it recommended that you never work live on your production server. Reserve working live for those very, very minor text edits.

how?
i need to perform edits on the server, live. i need to do this with expressions web 2. i need to do this without frontpage extensions instelled.
how can i log into the site? without FP extensions installed, when i try to login, EW2 rejects the login and respons with something about sarepoint services.
i use bluehost. it's an apache linux server.Without the extensions you have to use FTP. Just setup EW to use your FTP site instead of http. If you use http:// to try to open the web, EW will complaint because the FP extensions or sharepoint services are not present.
Be careful editing live. You can nuke the entire site if you accidentally change the wrong file while editing. Happens to the best of us.- Open the site using the ftp://websitename.com address and log on
Click a file to open it in design view and you will be prompted as to whether you want to edit live or download , edit and publish back to the server.

Reason why I think its a bad idea to work on a live site. Also, why let your visitors see your mistakes or issues you're working through.
