Why does Windows 7 RTM have "My Documents, My Pictures etc...?" What happened to just "Documents?" Is this just happening to me, or is this happening for everybody?

This is true for everyone, and they become visible when 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled.

They are NOT actual folders!  the entries you refer to areinstead 'junctions' which are included for compatibility purposes.  If software programs reference the folders present under previous Windows versions and no longer present in windows 7, those junctions' will redirect the call to the relevent folder.

For example, if a program is hard coded to use 'My Documents' in the 'Documents and Settings' folder used for Windows XP, then Windows 7 will redirect such calls to the relevent 'Documents' folder located under 'Users' in Windows 7.

Don't delete them or worry about them.  They're not really folders, and removing them can impact on your installed software programs.

      Hi,

No it isn't just happening to you. Once you click on the arrow next to the Documents the directory expands to show My Documents. The same applies with Pictures etc. I can't give you a reason why, but maybe someone simply forgot to remove the My out of the coding.

Is this going to be like this in the retail copy that can be bought at a store?

You can rename them to just Documents, etc.

      Hi ethanpilot,

The RTM 'is' the retail copy, so yes 'it is going to be like this.' However, as Lead3 has pointed out you can rename the folders to Documents, Pictures, Videos etc, if you so desire.

Well, since my posts were deleted and you now have a green checkmark on your self-proposed answer, I must state:

You were wrong on two points.

The first one you corrected after my post.  Hard links point to files.  Soft links are Junctions that point to folders.

The 2nd point is more important.  You have not corrected that.  Your user folders like Documents and Pictures and etc, they are NOT indirect links.  They are actual folders.  They have indirect links pointing at them for backward compatibility.  Those are hidden.  You are confused between these separate concepts.  The information stated and marked as Answer here is totally wrong.

Carey, I just proposed John_Barnett MVP's post as Answer.  Go ahead and delete that.  I want to see it.

I was delighted to see MY Folder go away in Vista.  Finally.  What does Microsoft think we are, retards?

Now it's back in Win7.  I guess they answered that.
