wmv thumbnails not saving
- Hi All,
I search around and didn't find much helpful.
When I pause a wmv file and select rebuild item in Media view of Expression Media. The thumbnail that is generated displays briefly in the Thumbnail view but when I do any other change to the catalog, the created thumbnail is replaced by a movie icon.
This process works perfectly well for avi, quicktime and mpeg movies just not wmv. Yes this happens with all my wmv files.
I've got Windows Media Player 11 (although I tried with only WMP9 and same issue). Expression Media 2 SP2. Yes WMV is in my Catalog Importers. I also tried making WMP11 my default player. Same issue.
Am I really the only person having this problem?
Thanks for any advice or help you can provide.

- This doesn't sound good... I'm not having a problem - WMV are playing fine for me on Windows 7.
What operating system are you on?

Thanks for responding.
The problem is not that the wmv don't play. They do. Perfectly.
The problem is that saving a thumbnail for a wmv file in Express Media doesn't work.
After setting an thumbnail for a wmv I see this icon appear instead of the thumbnail:

I'm using XP Pro.
Any thoughts?- Edited byBobbyFischer Saturday, July 04, 2009 5:36 PM

- Hi Bobby,
Actually, what I meant was that my thumbs are fine, all aspects of WMV work for me with no problem. Though I am on Windows 7. I don't have an XP machine here at home to test, but when I was on XP, I didn't see any problems either.
We use QuickTime for movies, so perhaps try uninstalling and reinstalling QT. Another thing that could affect it is the video driver. You might try booting into safe mode and see what happens there.
If all else fails, email xmforum at microsoft.com, and ask for assistance.

- Hi Anita,
Thanks again for answering.
I don't understanding your statement "We use QuickTime for movies". Quicktime on windows doesn't play WMV files to my knowledge. Doesn't Expression use WMP to play movies and uses QT for converting movies (which I'm not doing)?
Tried re-installing the newest version of QT. Also updated my WMV codec. Also updated to the newest video drivers. No change. In Safe Mode no WMV files show up in Expression at all (avi and mpg files do).
I did figure something out, using Microsoft's ASF viewer I've noticed that WMV1 and WMV2 codec files thumbnail normally. Its the WMV3 encoded files that don't work.
I absolutely love Expression but I have a ton of WMV files and I really need them to work properly!
Thanks for any help,
Bobby
