Future of EM2, Sharing of media over peer-to-peer network
- Hi Anita
Been reading your posts, very interesting, and greatly appreciated.
Used iView for years, then went to Aperture (stills only), but bought Expressions Media 1 anyway.
Now upgraded to EM2, running Snow on MacPro, Final Cut Pro.
Actually I have two systems, old with about 12TB of video and newer with about 4TB.
Q1. Is Em coming to an end? Do we need to start looking into something elsewhere.
Q2. How do I access all the drives, external and internal, on both my MacPros (peer-to-peer network).
Q3. Is there any benefit to running Mac Server on a third computer, with all the media.
Q4. Can I install EM2 on my MacBook Pro17 and use this to access the media on the MacPro systems?
Leighton
UPDATE - FOLLOW UP
So I just finished cataloging about 130,000 files, 90,000 stills and the balance video. Im about 1/3 of the way.
Now there are no thumbnails, just a rendering error.
Also, incredibly slow, spinning wheel constantly.
Am running 20GB RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card w 512 MB.
Dual monitors, but same issue on each.
Is this a sign of problems?

- Hi Leighton

A1. Expression Media recently moved to a new group at Microsoft - the one that is centered on pro photographers. They are still working on the future plans, and I don't have any inside information. It seems like it's taking a long time for an answer, and I'm just as curious as all of you.
Q2. How do I access all the drives, external and internal, on both my MacPros (peer-to-peer network).
A2. You need to make a connection through the Finder - on the go menu, connect to server. I think there must be some way to set up sharing first, but I really don't know what that is. I'll see if I can get JP (the Mac smart person) to pop in with an answer to that.
Q3. Is there any benefit to running Mac Server on a third computer, with all the media.
A3. Actually, I'd stick to peer to peer.
Q4. Can I install EM2 on my MacBook Pro17 and use this to access the media on the MacPro systems?
A4. Yes

Now there are no thumbnails, just a rendering error. - What kind of files? NEF will only build thumbnails on Snow Leopard if you are using the Apple rendering engine. (Change under preferences and rebuild items)
Also, incredibly slow, spinning wheel constantly. Sometimes the spinning wheel gets stuck, but the import finishes anyway. However, you are cataloging a huge number of items, and you may be running close to the 1.8 gig limit on the catalog. Depending on your preview and thumbnail options, you may run out of space after 2000 images. The hard upper limit is 128,000, so you won't be able to get all 130,000 items catalogued.

- Hello Leighton,
You asked how to enable file sharing on your MacPros. There is an Apple article that will walk you through the process. Check it out at the following web site:

-JP - Hi Anita
Thanks for the prompt reply. I REALLY appreciate it.
As a pro photog I sincerely hope EM stays around. There is not much out there that I am aware of that can do this, and nothing in the serious league.
By the way, my system was rendering Apple NEF, and yes the spinning ball kept spinning, but this am it had rendered exactly 128,000 images, then stopped. LOL
Clearly Im having capacity issues, so heres my suggestions:
1. As I already have my STILL IMAGE library in Aperture, I dont need to import them to EM anyway. (This library is about 98,000 images, older JPEG, since 2006 NEF shot on Nikon D3, D3X, and D200. Current size 1.6 TB, adding about 2,000 images a month)
2. I have a SELECT folder in PICTURES, that I plan to catalog under EM. These are FINAL images sent to clients and number about 3,000 images, including PSD's and PDF.
VIDEO
My main purpose / wishlist (lol) for EM is cataloging video. I use FCP and have looked at Final Cut Server as a way of doing this. But the software ($1000) cost and hardware ($3,000) is too high. I have about 12 drives, ranging in size from 2 Tb to 500 GB, with tens of thousands of clips, and many more to come as we are moving into this more.
3. Should I catalog each drive as a separate catalog? Can I do a keyword search across more than one cat, while it is closed?
You mentioned a 1.8 G limit, is that content or the catalogue itself.
Sorry to load you with so many questions.
As a sidenote, I am a member of a Final Cut Users group, and we have been discussing various referencing software. I mentioned iView, now EM, and noone else had heard of it. These are all professionals, college instructors or filmakers. I was "volunteered" to look into it and report back, so clearly I am not the only one out there looking. I will pass on your info to them when I do my "presentation" in about a month.
Many thanks
Leighton
- Thanks JP
I am familiar with file sharing, but that was an interesting article. Didnt know I could file share cross platform. Am running Windows Vista on Parallels on 6 Mac SL systems, all peer to peer. I call it a virtual network. LOL.
