I would like to get into ASP.NET alot more. I noticed alot of the books on ASP.NET cover using VWD pretty heavy. I am going to need VWD or am I okay with ES? Or would it benefit me to learn and use both?

The general rule of thumb is that VWD is for developers, people who will be writing their own ASP.NET controls, and Expression Web/Studio is for designers, people who create websites using those controls.

Most literature on the topic of asp.net will utilize tools that are free as a selling point to the accessibility of the information delivered by the document. VWD may not be as deep as EW in designer oriented functionality but, VWD is quite the capable web development tool with regards to asp.net at a fantastic price -- free. VWD also brings home the access points of Silverlight 3 and offers a diversified devlopment opportunity for expanding the UI concepts of asp.net greatly.

So the real aspect to ponder is simple -- the approach to asp.net is dictated by the core language set therein and it will be the same regardless of development platform. Which tool is right or better is determinent by only the user based on their personal preferences and need at the time.

I've used both and have not a single complaint and, to be honest, VWD taught me allot about how to get the most out of EW so there is a learning path to these tools in an abstract sense. If your starting out with asp.net then you should get your feet wet with VWD before committing any time and money. As your satisfaction is paramount to the success of the tool sets, regardless of assumed stature or performance, it is to your benefit and the entire process that the entry into the asp.net development model be as casual as possible up front.

This all applies to anyone regardless of their chosen field or technology base.

    Take care.
