Expression Studio 3 install fails - causes my computer to crash and screen goes blank (black) - anybody got any ideas?
- I downloaded Expressoin Studio 3 from MSDN and attempted to install on my desktop. I had already installed the same package on my laptop successfully. During the installation on my desktop PC my screen went blank and my machine stalled.
I tried several times more to install but with the same results although sometimes Expression Web 3 would get installed and could be used.
I have also from another source downloaded the installers for Expression Web 3 and Expression Blend 3 and had the same result when installing.
I've attempted to install/remove/re-install so much that the installer now just throws an error message with a fatal error.
I am running a Dell Optiplex 745 with 2GB RAM. I have the following installed:
Windows Vista Ultimate
VS 2008 SP1
SQL Server 2008 Developer edition
Office 2007 Ultimate
Silverlight 3 (including VS 2008 tools)
.Net 3.5 SP1
I have managed to install Expression Web 2 and Expression Blend 2 successfully but Expression 3 is causing all sorts of problems and I believe it also messed up my video driver (ATI Radeon X1300PRO).
I have saved all the install log files so can can send if you're interested.

- I had this problem, i tried to contact microsoft connect and send email to microsoft product solution. the only solution is to call microsoft, else you have to format
- Can you let me know what the problem was and how did Microsoft solve the issue?
- I also had this problem. The installer stacked halfway in the installation process. I forced my PC to reboot (by holding the power button for 5 secs). Since then, the computer started to behave abnormally. It frequently crashes. My system spec is very similar to ncranney's post above. Any help?
hi all,
i also had the same problem but i solved it partially...
the main problem is with Expresssion Web ...so i didnt installed expression web...
I just unchecked the Expression Web checkbox from the setup and now i was able to install other products in studio like
Design, encoder, blend...
so if u dont want web u can go this way...
vikrant- Hi All
I am having the same problem, the difference is that it crashed my system. I had to reinstall my system as it would reboot every time when it wanted to setup the network connections. has anyone been able to resolve this issue?
Ronald - I had similar problems with the Expression Studio 3 upgrade. My solution was:
Don't run the setup program for the studio suite. Instead open up the setup folder on the CD (or better yet copy it to your hard drive). Then run each of the .msi programs separately. That is Blend_en.msi, BlendSDK_en.msi, Design_en.msi, etc. separately. Do not, however, run the ExpressionStudio_en.msi, since that is for the entire suite and will cause a crash for those of us who have a problem with the installation.- Proposed As Answer byMikael R. If you have problems with your system crashing, reboot into safe mode. From there go to program files and delete the expression folder. This will stop the system from crashing. Then you can unistall the studio software. This will keep you from having to reinstall your whole system. Try it and if it doesn't work then I guess the hard way is the only way.
Hi,
I got the same error as described:
PROBLEM
==========
Installing Expression Studio (with Blend and Web) crashed my PC, black screened 2/3s of the way through installing.
Also just a fyi the first time I installed my pc keep on crashing and shutting down and rebooting itself, until I booted up in safe mode one time. Then my PC started behaving itself normally. The reason I uninstalled & reinstalled was because the menu item Expression Blend from my startup menu went missing today (no kidding I was like wtf). Anyway I tried to look for the exe but couldn't find it and so I decided to reinstall. During the second reinstall it got 2/3 of the way thru and then again black screen and rebooting madness. I could only overcome it by booting up in safe mode (F8 on start up) and then doing a Start > Run > msconfig and choosing Diagnostic Startup mode.
I didn't want Expression on my PC anymore as it made my pc unstable, so I first tried to uninstall it in safe mode, but no luck you cant uninstall Expression in SafeMode as it needs access to the Windows Installer utility.
I then started my PC in diagonstic mode (via msconfig described above) and when trying to UNninstall Expression Studio, it black screened my pc and caused it to reboot itself !
I was thinking at this point just to leave it on my system and never open Expression Web... that was until I realised I couldn't browse the web (using FF,IE,Chrome, Safari) but I could ping sites like www.google.com, arrrrh!

Installing DirectX 9 solves the Expression Studio install problem, download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en
NOTE: do a Start > run > dxdiag and even if you already have DirectX 9c, still go ahead with the latest DirectX 9 install (link above). You also probably have Expression Studio half installed when it "blacked out", dont despair run the Expression Studio 3 installer again without worrying about first uninstalling then reinstalling and it'll come good.
If your PC kept restarting like mine on boot up, go back to Start > Run > msconfig > select the Normal bootup mode instead of diagnostic mode.
If you got the issue of being able to ping sites but couldn't browse after 2 minutes, the solution for me was to update the Ethernet Driver and uninstall ZoneAlarm. Since then I've upgraded my ZoneAlarm and can browse the web without connection time outs after a min or 2.

Using msicuu2.exe (a Microsoft removal program) you will see:
Error 1704, An installation for Microsoft Expression Blend 3 is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?

This is a Microsoft product. What do you expect? Microsoft want £199.00 for a technical-support call on this. And my Vista Update has not worked for five months; nor has this little man — Piyush Kumar of UK Technical support — ever even acknowledged my emails.
Quoting from one of PK’s employees' emails:
“We pride ourselves at Microsoft on delivering an excellent service and we trust that you are totally satisfied with the service you have received. If you have any feedback about my work or your support experience, please send your comments and suggestions to my manager and the UK Management team by e-mailing v-2piyku@mssupport.microsoft.com?subject=Attention_of_Piyush_Kumar”
Will I be rushing to buy W7?
No; but Linux is good and stable. And its developers do give a damn.
mailto:v-2piyku@mssupport.microsoft.com?subject=Attention_of_Piyush_Kumar (or just try whistling; either is as effective).
