Proposed AnswerDevice may be in use by another program

New install of Encoder 2 SP2. Attempting live encoding.

ERROR with Canon HV20 over firewire (one of the most popular HDV cameras):
Cannot create device. The device may be in use by another program.

Input shows up as Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit Device.

Camera works fine with all Adobe capture programs.

Expression works fine with another Samsung DV camera but not with the better HDV Canon HV20. Tested on both Windows XP sp3 and AlienWare Vista 32-bit.

    Anyone have an answer?

Unfortunately EE does not support HDV cameras in HDV mode right now. We are currently investigating this feature for the next release.

I had a similar problem with my HV20/Windows 7 and any capture program I tried with it.  Here's how to fix it.  Its a setting on the HV20 that needs to be changed and not in Windows or the software:

    1. Go to Menu in HV20
    2. Go down 2 items to the "Play/Out Setup2" item
    3. Select DV Output
    4. Select DV Locked

This did it for me.  I no longer got the "Device is in use by another..." message and controls in software worked fine.

    Hope that helps...
