Expression Design has encountered a problem and needs to close

This is very similar to a problem that was posted here in late February. Expression Design does not want to start and goes to error.

I have tried the suggested fixes from the previous postings which include chkdsk /f, turned off hardware acceleration and checked the system variables. When I do boot to safe mode however, Design does start without errors. I have done a "repair" and a un-install and install. Expression Web and Expression Media works fine. But, Expression Blend does not work as well.

What else can we look at?

What operating system are you using? Windows XP SP2 or Vista?

Looks like you have done a good deal of troubleshooting on your own. Since it works in safe mode we know the problem is either driver related or a program or service running in the background causing the problem.

Next thing to try is MSConfig.

1. Start, Run (On Vista, , Run line) type MSCONFIG and hit ENTER or click OK. This brings up the system configuration utility.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup and uncheck Load Startup Items and Load System Services
3. Click Apply. After a few seconds the OK button will read 'Close'. Click that and you will be prompted to restart the machine. Click OK to restart.
4. Once the machine in restarted you will see a prompt saying you have booted the machine using the MSConfig. Click OK and then click Cancel. If you are prompted to restart the machine again, click 'Exit without restart'.
5. Try launching Expression Design again.

Please let me know the result.

To get the machine back out of MSConfig selective startup mode:

1. Enter the MSConfig utility again using Step 1 above.
2. On the General tab click Normal Startup and then click Apply, then Close. You will be asked to reboot the machine again.
3. Reboot the machine.

Also, please reply back with the following info:

* Are you using Expression Design 1 or 2?
* As Annie asked above, what operating system are you running?
* What video card do you have in this machine?

I encountered a similar problem with EW2 giving an 'unable to open error'.
Even trying to re-install EW2 resulted in the same error message when clicking the setup.exe flie.

I uninstalled EW2 and installed my original copy of EW1, this installed OK but had the same problen on opening, error, no start.

I decided to start over and to delete all .NET programs and re-download.

The problem was solved during this process.

.NET Framework 1.1 deleted sucessfully but EW1 would still not open.

I was unable to DELETE .NET 2.0 SP1, receiving an error message that other programs would be affected, so I clicked CHANGE. After this EW1 opened OK.

BTW .NET 3.0 SP1 and .NET 3.5 are also installed on my machine.

OS=My trusty un-cluttered, clean-lined XP PRO - What Windows should have been at the beginning.

Also a re-check of EW2 setup.exe confirmed that setup was also now working.

I have decided to stay with EW1 as I was never entirely happy with EW2.
